Is it or is it not an irony that a Sydney-New York instrumental math rock duo named Ground Patrol get most of their inspiration patrolling the skies? Each of their album covers is a breathtaking aerial view of natural architecture, each snapped from a plane. According to guitarist Kyle Sanna, it’s all part of the band’s scope.
“I love watching passing landscapes from airplane windows,” Kyle says, “these images fit our band name, and pairing visuals of landscapes with our music fits into the ‘earth sounds’ concept of our new album“.
Geophone is that new album, out March 20th. In their upcoming release, Ground Patrol continue to explore the foundations of music, every nook and cranny in musical space. Their stripped back sound depends not only on the notes, but also the gaps between them.
‘Quake’ is their first offering from Geophone. “This video alternates between abstract sections and overhead shots of landscapes,” Kyle says, “to me the abstract sections are visually analogous to the interplay of the guitar and drums: the dancing stars being the guitar parts and the stuttering lights being the drums“.
