NEW MUSIC // WHAT? NAH DISPENSE MEDICINAL AND HIGHLY MELODIC MATH ROCK ON SCINTILLA

What? Nah are a 4-piece from Leeds with a killer name and phenomenally chill vibes – but you probably already knew that.

What you may not have known, however, is that the band just put out an incredibly solid slab of jazzy math rock with their latest EP, titled Scintilla. Right off the bat, you know it hits the spot if you’re itching for jazzy, indie-flavored math but… Scintilla. It’s such interesting word. It almost sounds like a scented candle, or a brand of bug spray, or maybe some kind of hybrid strain of pipe weed… mmmm, pipe weed…

What? Sorry.

Anyway, turns out, the word technically describes a quality of ‘brightness or shiny-ness.’ But hey – we’re not here to define things for you. Make up your own meaning and stream it below.

For four songs that aren’t even particularly long, the EP manages to establish a consistent and enveloping atmosphere. With a run time of just over 11 minutes, you might expect a by the numbers collection of singles, but what What? Nah delivers is a solid 11-minute experience.

Of course, the songs are fantastic by themselves – “Matryoshka” and “Don’t Be a Stranger” really tug at the heartstrings in a way old favorites like Cuzco and Clever Girl used to do. But as impressive as anything the songs offer individually is the collective effect – you are IN that forest on the cover for 11 minutes, especially if you put on headphones.

Who wouldn’t want to be in that forest? Not us.

We highly recommend the trip. Be sure to smell the Scintilla in it’s entirety here, or buy us a coffee sometime here. Our poor little arteries are toast. Anyway. We’ve got more coming up from Will Ashby, Gentleman Pig, To Bloom, and a whole bunch more as we ease back into normal output mode. Thanks for reading.
