Seattle is yet again spawning schools of noisy, genre-fluid chaos musicians, and if you’re into things like math rock, sludge, doom, or just about anything gnarly, it’s truly an amazing time to explore the scene.
It’s a dense chunk of lore of course, with musical legends hailing from the Emerald City for decades now, but amongst the growing list of names to watch is a band called Anthers. We don’t know where there band name came from or what it means, but then again, not all quethtions need Anthers… sorry, we will see ourselves out. But not before sharing these incendiary sounds.
Their debut EP Pedigree Pig comes out September 20th – check out the napalm blast that is “ggbb” below:
Remember, today sees the release of Jesus Lizard‘s new album, the return of Big’n, and now Anthers – it’s Friday the 13th. With so many ripping tunes flying around this weekend, it’s probably a good time to stay away from lakes and abandoned summer camps. “ggbb” has an interesting drum beat too in the beginning there, and we noticed it before reading the blurb below from Taylor Clark, the band’s drummer, on the new song:
“This song may have come together the quickest on the album. We write at a very slow pace, because everytime something comes out sounding “normal” we either nix it or try to make it more interesting and weird. There are also never any riffs written outside of practice–we write everything together. This particular song started with the drum beat–EJ was asking for something specific in drum speak (which always sounds goofy but can yield great results) and I wanted to make the beat as close to what he was envisioning as possible. I often struggle with coming up with unique stuff to play on drums, so I absolutely love the challenge of translating my bandmates ideas–it’s just more interesting that way in my opinion. Once the beat was done everything fell into place quickly.”
It sounds like it came together quickly, too, in the best way possible. It’s hard to explain how gratifying it is when a song writes itself, it doesn’t happen too often unless you and your bandmates are really in tune with each other. That’s what it sounds like is going on here, so we’re definitely looking forward to feeling the full force of Pedigree Pig when it drops next week.
