Particularly keen Long time readers might remember us mentioning the math-y, emo-inspired UK act Adults, The Elderly, and Children a few years ago. Given the project’s name, it’s an especially obscure reference to verify within the site, but if you give them a cursory Bandcamp search, you’ll be glad you did as you’re readily met with melancholy, charmingly overcast delivery, and today, we’re get to pass along the evolution of that sound in the form of Mountain Bloom.
Mountain Bloom sees singer/guitarist Niall Coffey embracing splashes of ambient, electronica, and IDM without letting genre itself become a focal point. These elements stay cleverly camouflaged much of the time, but still allow Coffey and co to experiment with new tools and textures to expand their already well-defined palette.
We know by now that this isn’t always an easy balance to strike – since 2020 we’ve definitely seen an uptake in leaps into the unknown from existing artists. Mountain Bloom, on the other hand, seems more like a successor, or maybe some sort of surrogate sister band to AE and E. Luckily, there is more than enough substance (and sweetness) here to go around for old-heads and new fans alike.
Check out their new single “Juno” below.
It’s nice to hear some shades of Manchester Orchestra and/or Bad Books-styled vocals in there, and it fits in nicely on a playlist with the floaty-yet-driving feels of early LITE, or even parts of Lift, the solo project from Frontierer guitar Dan Stevenson we helped premier over the pandemic.
Regardless of what it reminds you of, “Juno” takes you for a pleasurable spin down a path that’s both new and familiar at the same time. Also, it’s probably worth noting that this is their first single since their 2020 debut. Hopefully this means we’ll be hearing more from the lads soon. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.
Be sure to check out the Mountain Bloom debut on Bandcamp here, and if you’re feeling rich af, why not throw us a coffee here. When it’s digital, it doesn’t splash around or burn your mouth as much. We’re hard at work on a bunch of stuff right now, but mostly the compilation, which should be out imminently! Cheers and as always, thanks for reading!
