We’ve carelessly said it before, and we’ll carelessly say it again – hell, if you’re reading this, you’ve probably said it yourself: “if you sample Alan Watts, you’re math rock.” Today we examine another joyous proponent of this concept in the shape of New York’s Job Creators.
With their latest single, Job Creators manages to give the ol’ sage a bit of a new context, with some nifty tempo wavering and spacey, sputtering keys. It also has an interesting late 1980’s new-wave undercurrent to it, but not in the way you might think.

It’s kind of a trip, right? Just when you’re about to look away, the band pulls the rug out from under you, and it happens more than once. It doesn’t lose any momentum in this, but it does make you curious what is going to come next. It’s not like a genre-smashing chaotic thing, we’d be used to that. Now that we think about it, it’s kind of like a wave. It builds up, gets a little weird, crescendoes into something entirely different, and then mellows out into unity again. Damn.
Well, while we’re on the subject of waves, bonus points for incorporating the Alan Watts sample into the actual song title and, to a certain extent, the artwork. Not to mention that it’s not necessarily the most commonly sampled speech (or part of the speech) of his, so hopefully it will inspire younger readers to seek out more of the legendary wise guy’s advice, and the rest of the Job Creators discography.
