Space Corolla – Never Happy (2018)

Puerto Rico’s Space Corolla have been teasing us with their unique blend of math rock and pop punk for about 2 years now. They finally and unexpectedly delivered their debut release Never Happy today. It’s a densely detailed expansion of everything that got us hooked on their sound in the first place. Bold lyrics relating to existential crises, self-medication, popular music, and self-doubt are woven around energetic guitar riffs and scatterbrained rhythms. From a Fall of Troy-esque banger like ‘Copamarina’ to a groovy, atmospheric vibe a kin to Faraquet or even Orchards in the song ‘Stranger Danger’ makes this 6 track album feel multidimensional. This trio packs a lot into a small 3 to 4 minute package, somewhat reminiscent of Cleft’s “turbo-prog” sound.
