We love a good math rock, and sometimes we even love a decent post-rock – it just has to follow certain parameters. That being said, no matter what you call the following band, it’s a sound that hits close to home on a number of levels.
Formerly known as Ghost Forest, Wave Mosaic seems like a more fitting name for the Ben Toledo-led project, as it pushes and pulls with the force of supernatural, low-end dominating post-rock, reminding us more of bands like Caspian and sleepmakeswaves than Don Caballero, although we can hear hints of that as well.
Check out “Cobra Lily” below, a single that not just sounds great but looks great thanks to artwork by Antonio Pereira of Zeta and Codefendants.
We first met Ben ages ago in the ranks of Childspeak and Other Lights when both of our bands opened for Felix Martin, the undefeated maestro of double-8-string guitar. We randomly ran into Ben after soundcheck, both making remarks about the Rancid song being played over the PA, and we remember talking about power supplies like the newest one at the time from Walrus Audio, but the rest of that night is a blur.
However, our friendship with Ben is thankfully anything but – when Other Lights sadly dissolved, Ben stepped in to play bass for Childspeak at a pretty critical time if we do say ourselves, and though over time we both moved on from that band as well, we routinely geek out on effects pedals, The Armed and more to this day, so it’s great to see him firing on all cylinders. Hopefully there’s more coming down the pike – in the meantime, don’t forget to check out their other single, “react/refract” on the Wave Mosaic Bandcamp as well! We’ll keep you posted.
