EXCLUSIVE // MEMBERS OF TOWN PORTAL AND TRADER FORM INVENTORY, SIGN TO SOFA BOY RECORDS, AND RELEASE ETHEREAL NEW SINGLE

It can be a difficult task as an artist to separate one’s nostalgia from legitimate inspiration when trying to create something new or original, especially when it comes to music. Some would even say there’s ultimately no point, and that you should just enjoy the process of spontaneous creation – others remain traditional and studiously trace core characteristics of what came before. As hopeless musical romantics, we get a lot out of both arguments, and today we’re lucky to present a band that blends the best of both worlds: Inventory.

The band just signed to Sofa Boy Records, which is an independent label ran by none other than the lads of Delta Sleep. Having just signed Real Terms and Mahogany Hand Glider as well, Inventory joins the discerning label at a perfect time, and bring a unique edge to their sound in that they will remind you of the best of 90’s grunge and post-punk without being reminiscent of anything from that era in particular.

Check out their single “Relay” below to get what we mean when we say they mix the best of nostalgia with ingenuity – also, that’s Christian from Town Portal on vocals and guitar, not to mention… trumpet, yes, trumpet! You actually hear it in this song towards the end, and spoiler alert, it’s pitch-perfect stuff. Other members of the band are associated with Danish post-punkers Trader, and the combination of both parties’ respective sounds makes for something perfectly stimulating for the millennial among us:

The single comes from their upcoming EP Sunday Tonne, which is the follow up to their 2023 debut Memory is a Plow. The whole thing is due out January 31st – here’s more from the press release:

“On Inventory’s upcoming EP, Sunday Tonne, the band delves into the existential questions of adult everyday life. The lyrics explore life – defining decisions about parenthood, work life and relationships. The type of thoughts that keep you awake, staring at the ceiling as Sunday draws to a close and the relentless workweek looms on the horizon. Each theme is explored through Inventory’s distinct
musical lens, combining playful experiments with slow and driving 90s rock. Sunday Tonne is the band’s second effort after 2023’s Memory is a Plow. The songs on this EP are more direct in both sound and lyrics, with an expanded sonic landscape featuring new instruments and nuances. This collection of tracks feels both intimate and relatable, balancing the person al and the universal, seamlessly moving between dissonance and beauty. Inventory comprises members from Town Portal, Mørkt Stof, and Trader: Christian Ankerstjerne (guitar, vocals, keys, trumpet), Jacob Koefoed (drums, keys), Joakim Møller Johnsen (bass, vocals), and Christian Aumayr (guitar, keys). Sunday Tonne will be released on January 31st, 2025. The EP was recorded and mixed in Copenhagen by Christian Ankerstjerne, and mastered by Mark Roberts in Brighton, UK.”

We’ll have to wait and see if the band goes on tour with their mates or not, because we’re sure it would be one hell of a good time. We’re optimistic of course, but in the meantime “Relay” has more than enough to keep us buzzing along, and thankfully we’ve just got a couple more weeks until the entirety of Sunday Tonne is officially out. Normally at a job we would hate having to take inventory, but this time, we can’t wait.
