NEW MUSIC // SQUID PISSER DISMANTLES DEATH AND DYSMORPHIA WITH VIDEO FOR “SMOG OF SELF ABUSE”

At this point, there’s no denying it – Squid Pisser are coming up hard and fast as a true force to be reckoned with no matter what kind of music or sub-genre you associate them with. Earlier this year, the band dropped the filthy Vaporize a Neighbor EP, which doubled as a comic book release, featuring predictably grotesque depictions.

That being said, they’re already up to quite a bit more, not the least of which of course being guitarist Tommy Meehan’s recruitment into GWAR‘s touring ranks – but we’ll get to that in a moment. A video for “Smog of Self Abuse,” the second track off of Vaporize a Neighbor, has just dropped, and despite the typical ferocity of the band’s overall presence, there’s a bit more than meets the eye going on here:

As Meehan elaborates, “The song is a warning against cultivating hate, growing bitter and wallowing in the self pity and negativity that sour so many people in this world. It’s about becoming lost in a haze of perpetual confusion and self abuse to the point of epic violence. Suburban teens shooting up schools. Domestic bombing attacks on civilians. The song focuses on the death of innocence and the ingredients that fester in order to give birth to a sinister mind. The video is about embracing those parts of yourself that society deems unworthy. Beauty can be whatever the fuck you want it to be. Go to the mall. Eat hot dogs. Live inside of a dumpster. If you feel it, you’re glamourous. You’re oozing with your own sex appeal. Don’t let society tell you you’re not good enough. Embrace your own thing, dive in and be you. You own yourself and nobody else does…”

What a cathartic, beautiful sea of uplifting ugliness – and we mean that sincerely. The director provided some more background on the filming process:

“The first step in creating the Smog Of Self Abuse video was Tommy cutting together a basic animatic of ripped YouTube footage to the song. Although it was mostly just clips of Japanese butoh dancing and a lot of old Godzilla footage, it served as an effective roadmap of how he was visualizing this sonically complex track… Godzilla revolves around the concept of the price of human progress. I thought I would mirror that by shooting in a bunch of locations that are currently being afflicted by just that. As technology progresses – malls and drive-throughs are becoming a thing of the past. They are becoming fantastic and unguarded shooting locations…”

Squid Pisser has a new album coming out this month as well titled Dreams of Puke, which you can pre-order here via Sweatband and SKiN GRAFT Records. So between a new music video, a new album, and playing in a legendary metal band on the side, you’d think that would be enough for the band – but you’d be wrong.

The band just announced they will not only be touring with GWAR, but the inimitable Melt-Banana. What’s next, a bid for presidency? Hey, we’d vote for them in a heartbeat. Anyway.
