Either way, the Singles Broken Up column is meant to function as a speed date of sorts for readers short on time that still find themselves thirsting for the new and notable, so… ready to mingle? Excellent – this week we’ve got you covered with drops from Yomi Ship, Gudewife, Primate House, FRGGD POND, Din of Celestial Birds and X Suns.)
Yomi Ship – “Devil Djinn”
Yomi Ship’s 2024 surreal prog odyssey Feast Eternal took us by total surprise and we’ve been waiting patiently ever since wondering what they’d get up to next. With “Devil Djinn” the Perth project injects more of a far-sighted desert trek vibe, but the journey stays spry with cinematic accents and borderline samba parts, and you can really tell it’s part of a larger story so we’re eager to hear the rest as soon as possible. (Also shoutout to the incredible art for the album by Christiane Shortal.)
FFO: NYOS, YON, Pavlov’s Bell
Primate House – “Numb Skull”
Brooklyn’s Primate House just put out a single for their first record in ten years, and it’s guaranteed to bounce around your head for days once you hear it. “Numb Skull” is catchy, massively dynamic, and technically follows something like a traditional structure but it has a winding stream-of-consciousness thing to it that exudes class and really makes it feel unique.

Gudewife – “When Silence Forgets Itself”
Another fresh ripper from Ripcord Records, Gudewife’s latest single is the first time in a while we’ve instinctively landed on the word ‘trippy.’ Almost taking hints from progressive sludge and stoner rock, it has a contemplative, perhaps even meditative nature to it that’s extremely pleasurable once you sink into it.

Din of Celestial Birds – “From This Summit We Can See the Heavens and the Stars”
For this one we really wanted to make sure we share the video from Chris Core, which is really remarkable to look at with its twisting, morphing, vaguely art deco aesthetic. What’s great is the visual strangeness ties in perfectly with Din of Celestial Birds’ inexorable music, with their latest single leaning even further into post-metal.

X Suns – “Giantess”
X Suns have been a consistent force of nature when it comes to Seattle’s burgeoning post-rock and post-metal scenes. “Giantess” feels like a more melodically dense direction for the band, but they keep the sense of scale they’re known for as they hone an even sharper, even heavier sound.
FFO: Blackshape, Cloudkicker, Pelican
FRGGD POND – “HARDSOFTPORN”
When we first checked out the new FRGGD PONF, we couldn’t help but think ‘now there’s a song title that grabs you by the… attention.’ The relatively new post-hardcore band from Merida, Mexico aims to shred both heart strings and vocal cords in a fascinating cocktail of emotions that keeps your foot tapping till the very end.
