SINGLES BROKEN UP // DROPS FROM GENGHIS TRON + SUN GUTS + I.O + HORSE LORDS + PLASTIC PSALMS

(Editor’s Note: Every once in a while we’re asked why there aren’t more Don Caballero puns around the site, and you know what? Maybe we haven’t lived math rock, maybe that’s on us. Either way, the Singles Broken Up column is meant to function as a speed date of sorts for readers short on time that still find themselves thirsting for the new and notable, so… ready to mingle? Excellent – this week we’ve got you covered with drops from Genghis Tron, Sun Guts, I.O, Horse Lords, and Plastic Psalms.)

Genghis Tron – “Born Prey”

Dear god, we’re only just beginning to break free of the hold Genghis Tron’s last album had on us, but at the same time we know it’s been long enough. Besides, we were always willing captives – it seems like they’re pushing the dynamic back into the fiery, scream-y Board Up the House territory, but they’re also keeping everything great about Dream Weapon, easily making Signal Fire one of our most anticipated records of 2026.

Sun Guts – “Terminator Cross”

Greg Kubacki nuked people’s expectations last year by not only putting out a short and sweet Car Bomb EP but a gargantuan solo record that saw him spread out into new, exciting sounds. Kubacki’s tones are as imposing as ever, but so is his inventiveness. From pitch-shifting and sliding scales to leviathan string bends, it’s like the party never stopped. Get back in the pit when Supervoid comes out August 16th, and don’t miss out on those nifty pre-orders!

I.O – “Centuries Away”

For some this one might be tough, but we think most of you will enjoy it’s sense of tension – imagine if MSPAINT and Hella got together, but instead of trying something obscure, they tried to make deeply personal post-hardcore that sounds like it’s from the past and future simultaneously.

Horse Lords – “First Galactic Utopia”

For math rockers in need of something truly enveloping, Baltimore’s Horse Lords has always been a go-to. “First Galactic Utopia,” the latest single from their upcoming Demand to Be Taken to Heaven Alive! is a perfect illustration as to why: the first thing they do is establish groove for your limbs and body to… you know, gyrate a little, and this one definitely gets the blood flowing. But the second thing they do is introduce their signature Horse Lords special sauce, if you will, where they toss in polymeter and meticulous harmonic movements for maximum cranial displacement.

Plastic Psalms – “Mound of Ash”

This incendiary noise punk out of Tulsa feels perfectly timed for what everybody’s feeling, being a massive need for release. It kind of reminds us of The Armed which we could only ever mean as high praise, but Plastic Psalms also has it’s own take on angular, shout-y catharsis that stands on it’s own. Definitely looking forward to their upcoming LP Hostile Architecture, due out on Horton Records this July.
