It’s been far, far too long since we heard from Halifax’s Wot Gorilla?. When we last heard from them it was… hold the phone… 2017? That cannot be right. Well, a lot has changed since then hasn’t it, maybe we’ve just lost track of time. But it’s alarming, to say the least, even if just about everything is these days.
That being said, today we’re lucky, because “Very Good, Daniel!” seems to be a pretty effective vehicle for time travel, especially if you’re looking to revisit the golden years of early 2000’s post-hardcore. The song dips and darts while staying focused, honoring the traditions set by bands like Circa Survive and Fall of Troy.
But while some might argue that the bands above or post-hardcore in general peaked a decade ago, Wot Gorilla?’s new single has us absolutely stoked for whatever’s next. Not only does the band still have that ‘it’ factor displayed on “Joints” and Angel Numbers, it seems like they’re actually keeping it fresher than ever with more unexpected twists and turns. Check it out below:
It’s the kind of music you want to rage and dance to at the same time, not unlike Closure in Moscow or Callous Daoboys when you consider how the song grooves as a whole yet also turns tight corners to deliver abrupt scene changes.
Also, if something about the mix feels familiar, no, you’re not crazy – “Very Good, Daniel!” (and the rest of the band’s upcoming record) was engineered by Joe Gibb, a legendary UK producer who’s credits deserve a blog of their own. From Catatonia, Massive Attack, and Jane’s Addiction to Million Dead and Johnny Truant, the producer has amassed quite the dynamic range, but Gibb’s understanding of the sonic rainbow makes for a great fit when it comes to Wot Gorilla?
There’s more to share in due time, so keep an eye out!
