NEW MUSIC // SCIENCE PENGUIN “RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITIES” WITH A BANGER NEW SINGLE

All of the sudden Science Penguin have us thinking about something kind of funny. When you think about it, the phrase “resume normal activities” is something you’d only hear in post-emergent situations. Like, “the coast is clear, you can resume normal activities now,” or “hey, Science Penguin, it’s been a minute since we heard a new one from you! You can resume normal activities!”

Luckily, what we’re actually here to talk about is indeed Science Penguin’s new single, titled, you guessed it, “Resume Normal Activities.” There’s no word yet on whether or not it’s part of anything upcoming like an EP or new album, but we wouldn’t be surprised as Why Am I Like This? came out in 2022.

Check it out below:

Continuing with our vaguely meta line of questioning from the intro, “Resume Normal Activities” actually captures some of this exact energy, which we’ve been dealing with a lot lately. There’s a sense of “what did we just witness?” that’s all too relatable – you can feel it in the driving drums, the determined guitars, and the optimistic bass lines.

Keeping in line with the Germantown trio’s traditions, the song’s tone is chunkier than a tub of Adam’s Natural peanut butter, but introduces some freshness to the mix with twin guitars, a bass solo, and oodles of complexity. There’s still bits of detectable Scale the Summit and Protest the Hero influence, but Science Penguin have developed more of their own voice, and you can really hear it this time around in the pacing, melodies, and all around feel.

Also, speaking of chunkiness, the mixing and mastering preserve this quality in the perfect proportions, allowing the drums, bass, and guitar to shake things up in their respective frequencies without muddy low’s or harsh highs. Much like the psychedelic collage on the track’s cover, “Resume Normal Activities” flashes enough to get your attention, but it also gives listeners enough space to ruminate on its true meaning.

Whether or not you think it’s time to resume your normal activities, you should blast the rest of the Science Penguin discography here, and we’ll keep you posted.
