NEW MUSIC // PLANETS ECLIPSE EXPECTATIONS OF CHAOTIC MATH ROCK ON THE RAZOR SHARP YAWN

You know how most of the time we try to wordplay a bit with band names or the titles of EP / LP’s we’re covering in the intros? Up to the point of finishing this one, we were trying to work out a punny way of saying that Planets had aligned.

Turns out, there’s no shortage of planetary or astrological themes to riff on – but we kept getting distracted. YAWN, Planets’ newest, borders chaotic mathcore with it’s constant and unforgiving intensity, but it’s also very math rock in it’s structure, delivery, and song titles. It’s like the Cloverfield monster (at least from the original film) where you’re craning your neck to see it, but you’re also constantly running from its destruction.

Also, to just take the idea of extremes to… well, extremes, the physical orders for YAWN on Bandcamp come with a “dual-purpose USB 3D-printed knife” that glows in the dark, so that’s an easy recommendation from us. Storage and self-defense, all in one place? What more could you want, sick tunes? Oh yeah – check those out below:

Hints of Lightning Bolt, Hella, and CLOUTCHASER abound in the razor storms of distortion that are “THEY DIDN’T BREAK ME” and “VOICE OF COTTON,” but also heavy ingredients like PSUDOKU and Inside the Beehive. All these elements help paint a picture of the overall effect of Planets, but their handle on goblin-mode drum and bass synergy is something better witnessed than described. Let it knock the wind out of you. Give in to the impulse to repeat the songs four to five times each. Surely you will not regret rapid exposures to YAWN‘s unsubtle atmosphere.

For a band that’s teased the world since 2010 with sporadic singles for years now, and with YAWN, not to mention the band’s similarly explosive S/T from last year, it seems like Planets are finally orbiting close enough for everyone to get a good look. Whatever chaotic two-piece magic Paul and Thomas have employed, it’s working – we’ll definitely be watching for next planetary cycle, but YAWN gives us more than enough to process until then.
