Perth’s flood has been creeping up on radars for just about a couple of years now with a brand of progressive emo somewhere between At the Drive In, Delta Sleep, and Closure in Moscow.
Whatever it is, it’s clean, mean, and often, fairly math rock. Each single has built more anticipation than the last – singles like “Pool” and “Kintsugi” showed off surprising depth in their classy approach to chords, melodies, and unorthodox structure. Now that their debut is finally here in full, we’re excited to report it’s an even wilder ride than we anticipated.
As an album, Like Glass fully delivers on the promise of what we’ve heard up till now, maybe even outdoing the first batch completely. Those songs don’t slouch either, it’s just that it feels particularly good when the actual bones of an LP are as good as the first impressions.
There’s a distinct confidence overall that’s just… vibey. It’s casual, but oozing with capability. Songs like “Borders” and “Slump Valley” aren’t pulsating with flash, they take their time to impress naturally and breeze past expectations. Trust us – they’ll get you. Or actually, don’t. Go in a cynic if you want, the odds are still pretty high you’ll come out a believer in flood after Like Glass.
Fans of Delta Sleep, Hail the Sun, and Avec Plaisir will find a lot to love with flood, but even if those bands aren’t your thing, you owe it to yourself to try Like Glass. It’s a debut that just scratches a certain subconscious itch with piercing sense of vision, and it’s one that stays with you long after its duration for how unique it’s overall palette is.
