Yes, we’ve been molasses slow at catching up to current events in music, but we don’t feel too terrible about it. Not only is it supposed to be slow season in terms of releases, but in the face of what’s going on throughout the world, we, and you, should be taking all the time necessary to process what are shaping up to be historic times.
That being said, there ARE things happening, and some of them are magical. For instance, you might have missed it, but last week amidst the snow and murder, Lightning Bolt and OOIOO announced a split EP, and it looks wicked.
Out this April via Thrill Jockey Records, THE HORIZON SPIRALS / THE HORIZON VIRAL is sure to bring cacophononic joy to people everywhere, even if they’re unfamiliar with OOIOO, which is actually an off-shoot of Boredoms. The first song of the record, which comes courtesy of Lightning Bolt, is available now:
The title “Cloud Core” might have you wondering if the Brians are finally starting to mellow out or explore the reverberated, soft pads of cloud rap. We’d pay to see that, but thankfully, in this case you’d be wrong as hell. Describing the song’s arc is frankly quite difficult – it almost feels like the track’s being played backwards and forwards at the same time across multiple instances over some kind of battlefield. Bur rest assured, we love it. Above all it’s cathartic, and we’re tempted to say it’s angrier than what we got on Sonic Citadel, which is still a ripper all these years later.
If the single is any indication, we’re in for one hell of a screed from the Brians, which should surprise no one at this point. We’ll have more for you when the record comes out, but if you haven’t make sure to check out OOIOO’s last record To The Forest To Live A Truer Life, a minimalist masterclass with hints of jazz, noise rock, sci-fi field recordings, and more.
