People these days like to call each other “chronically online,” and sometimes, we totally identify. We’re not always sure, but it’s hard right? In a world where pretty much all relevant information isn’t just stored, bur presented digitally, what does the term even mean? Chronically aware? That sounds more realistic, for better or for worse.
Luckily, the kids are old enough now to start making tunes that reflect this cybernetic evolution in a way that feels organic, like Nashville’s Fabulous Fabulist. The bones of Fabulous Fabulist are somewhere between power-pop, emo, math rock, and post-rock, but on top of everything there’s sheen of charged tension all it’s own.

Some interesting jazz background shines through the telemetry as well, so really, it’s almost not even helpful to consider genre when listening to Fabulous Fabulist. “We’ll Have This Forever” feels heavy and energetic without becoming metal, while tracks like “Quiet Out Loud” and “Hype Beast Master” yield razor sharp slices of introspection. That’s not to say the record’s not consistent, because it is, just one song at a time, kind of like Coheed and Cambria, but by way of Algernon Cadwallerer. Themes are thoroughly explored.
If you, like many of us, feel pretty tense these days, Null and Noise offers an intense blend of catharsis and escape, while also carving out a uniquely melodic and forward-thinking space all it’s own.
