Ah, it’s finally here – the sweltering summer season has been burning us about, but one thing keeping us excited about it is Daydream Plus and their third album Second Last Day of Summer.
While they’ve definitely built a consistent sound, they’re hardly ones to rest on their laurels. Escape At Your Own Pace built heavily on the infectious chill of Clues Recalled from Memory, and with their new record leaning even further into harmonies and new levels of production, it just might be there best yet.
“Metropolitan Mirage” and “Speed Limit” are sure to be fan favorites, imbuing their established formula with not just singable lead lines in the place of vocals, but relatable feelings beneath them. You can feel the excitement, the awe, the tension, all of it, and that’s a really difficult thing to do in a distinct way with instrumental music.
Real ones will remember our article from a month or two ago where we talked about the fact that Second Last Day of Summer is sort of a two-in-one deal when you consider those that pre-ordered it also get to hear it in 8-bit / Famitracker form via Extended Forecast, and we can tell why they wanted to now that it’s all out in the open.
Second Last Day of Summer is great setup for that kind of translation. It genuinely sounds like this record, of all in the DD+ discography, would be most fun to use for that kind of project – songs like “Stiletto Flourish” and the trio of interludes would feel completely natural in a videogame, and that’s one of the highest compliments we can think of. But better than a compliment we can’t comprehend is one we really mean that’s easily understood, so to sum it up Daydream Plus currently lead the pack in the race for math rock album of the summer.
