NEW MUSIC // COVET TURNS THE PAGE WITH “DENOUEMENT (FT. LITE)”

The last few years have been a whirlwind for Covet, with massive tours and lineup changes in the wake of their explosive last album, catharsis. The album broke a number of musical ceiling for the project, and in the cooldown period that followed, you’d be forgiven for thinking Yvette Young and co would be taking it easy.

But really, catharsis set the scene for what seems to have been a renaissance for Young, with singles like “Outta Sight, Outta Mind” and “Always” showing a radically different side of her capabilities. Though a far cry from math rock or her normally acoustic solo material, it’s been highly rewarding, and just in the last few months she’s also featured on singles from Adebisi Shank and LITE.

Oh, and she also helped create and release the Qi, her signature guitar pedal with Walrus Audio. But TODAY, we’re talking about “Denouement,” the new Covet single, which just came out this week, and in case you’re wondering what that means, hear for yourself below:

What’s particularly cool about “Denouement” is that you can still hear that it’s very much a Covet sound, but also that it’s kind of a party – more than a quick feature from LITE, the song has bass and programmed drums from JunIzawa, but also live drums from Jessica Burdeaux and other bass parts tracked by John McCall. It’s also really non-linear for Covet from a compositional standpoint, feeling way more experimental and high-tech with math rock functioning more like the skeleton or tendons underneath.

It’s been a solid couple of years since catharsis, and while we don’t have anything to go off at press time to infer another LP is arriving anytime soon, we can still cross our fingers.
