Uppsala, Sweden’s Comprehending should be generally familiar to steady readers at this point – the formerly one-man project has put out nearly a dozen singles since 2020 that blend post-rock and math rock, most of which seem to conjure feelings of… outside-ness. You know, nature, touching grass, and the like.
We’d say that’s always a good association to have with music of any kind. But Comprehending’s growth over the years, including the addition of a new drummer, is starting to show in the narrative concept of their first LP The Perils and Rewards of an Unknown Path, hopefully releasing this September.
“…Some choices are actively made but a lot of them are mere consequences of past ones. This can at times feel daunting but you have to remember to appreciate the ride and sometimes let go of control. In the end all you can do is try to find the best moments in the situation you’re in.”

“‘Ventured Paths’ is the opening track of our upcoming album ‘The Perils and Rewards of an Unknown Path’ and contemplates the different paths one finds in life and ultimately follows.”
See the video still harkens to that outdoors-y splendor, and for the most part the music does too – “Ventured Paths” actually feels like their most math rock song to date. But also, the band originally intended to release the album through a label, so when they eventually decided to to go independent for Perils and Rewards…, it meant they had to re-record some material.
We have faith the magic will be preserved, but also we’re looking forward to seeing if they made any changes, because artists tend to take the chance when they can, and you never know what you’re going to end up with. There’s that old saying that art is technically never finished – only left alone, so it’ll be exciting to see what they came up with. But only if they wanted to! So far, we haven’t had any complaints other than it just being singles. Finally getting an LP out of them means we’ll be able to absorb the full scope of Comprehending’s evolution – check out the rest on Bandcamp here.
