Adebisi Shank

NEW MUSIC // ADEBISI SHANK STRIKES BACK WITH AN “ORANGE SPLASH (FEAT. YVETTE YOUNG)”

With Adebisi Shank having already announced their imminent return, our excitement levels have been pretty peaked. “Start A Band,” the band’s first single from This Is The Second EP Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank, was a welcome blast from the past that instantly took us back to the days of the band’s earliest, rawest incarnation that caught many by surprise.

But today the band dropped another single on us, and this one gives strong This Is The Second Album of A Band Called Adebisi Shank vibes, which is such a distinct and rarely touched upon ecosphere in music, we can hardly contain our excitement… again. This world might be rapidly descending into dystopia, but bands like Shank still know how to make us happy.

Oh, and this time they brought in the one and only Yvette Young to help, which was an incredible choice, which we’ll get to in a moment – first, hear it for yourself below:

Not only is Yvette Young another artist that helps people stay positive in dark times, she’s also on the cutting edge of noise making in terms of guitar and production, which makes her an ideal fit when you also consider that the band’s bassist is heavy into sound design via his gig as VMC Sound, not to mention guitarist Lar Kay’s ever-futuristic approach.

Wait… didn’t Yvette feature some literal orange splashes in her video last week for “Outta Sight, Outta Mind” a couple weeks ago? Coincidence? Conspiracy? Who knows at this point.

Regardless, the vocals stabs in the verses of “Orange Splash” are the most distinctly This Is The Second Album… element of the song, but so is that galloping groove. Again, it’s just so uniquely Shank. It’s the kind of music that the digital citizens of Tron would listen to while cruising on their laser bikes – gridded and mapped out, but pulsing with life at every turn.

Whatever we’re in for on the other half of the EP, we know it’s going to be special. It’s not that no one else can do the dance, it’s just that few would conjure the same aural forces following the same steps. There’s just something mythic about the trio’s chemistry, and the addition of Yvette Young on this song just shows that they’re still capable of pulling a fast one on us in the best way possible. Literally, people were messaging us and asking us if we thought Young would actually be on the track, or if Shank was just being clever. While it would have been hilarious if that were true, we’re glad it worked out the way it did.

For now, all we can do is remain rabid and wait until the full EP’s release August 15th. Pre-order it here.
