You know, sometimes musical heroes actually do wear capes… even if it’s mostly in prog. But generally, they are known to get in the way, so it’s far more likely to see them dress things up with odd, occasionally even grotesque masks.
From Slipknot and Sleep Token to King Ghidora and Daikaiju, you can see all kinds of styles and themes on display, and today we’re honored to present an exclusive cut from Space Blood, the wackadoo math rock fun fest featuring our very own William Covert.
It’s their first new song in years, but considering the chaos that’s defined the world since “Where’s My Chippy?”, it feels like they’ve been here the whole time – “Holotropic Earth Theory,” consistent with the band’s menacing, nightmare clown-adjacent aesthetic, starts like it’s luring in listeners like unsuspecting prey. Soon though, the plodding bass and waterfall drum lines give way to noisy yet heady screeds of progressive, loop-driven, tap-happy math rock.

You’ve got to hand it to them, for a two man crew, Space Blood sound so much bigger and more complex than should be possible, echoing the greatness of bands like El Ten Eleven and Giraffes? Giraffes!. There’s also still something uniquely mischievous about these guys and the new single, fitting in with the masked bands above while carving out their own space… blood.
But before we go, here’s a rather important blurb from Covert himself:
“This video was shot by Puddle Splashers at my 40th Birthday Show on 2/1/2025, which was also celebrating Space Blood’s 11th Anniversary. “Holotropic Earth Theory” is a brand new song, and is the first new Space Blood song to be released since 2018. The new track, released digitally on 7/8/2025, is also the lead single off the new Space Blood live album – Live at Cobra Lounge, Chicago which will be released on Friday, August 1, 2025. Puddle Splashers filmed Space Blood’s entire set of the reunion show, and there will be more videos released in connection to the new live album recorded at the same show the videos are filmed.
