If you can make words like ‘cyberpunk’ and ‘futuristic’ come to mind, you’re gonna go far in these parts. Math rock fans spend a lot of time holding up and analyzing the past, and sometimes that means they focus less on the magic in front of them – luckily, Double Mint Dragon have returned from their slumber with a fantastic reminder to not just be present, but forward thinking.
“Holographic Fern” tests the relationship between the science of delay pedals and the emotional rewards of expansive instrumental post-punk. Thanks to its sheer sense of propulsion and focus, it sails past the tropes of post-rock and enters wild, wistful territory that really only they can define, and in 2026, that’s just an objectively beautiful thing to see.

The Brooklyn-based duo have always had a unique sense of vision. Their 2023 record Silver Volt still hits like a baseball hat in the hands of some kind of assassin or bouncer. In fact, as much as the band has in common in terms of setup as Battles, they almost share more musical crossover with luminaries the world over like PARANOID VOID or Quadrupède.
Also can we just take a moment to visualize and hold the idea of a “Holographic Fern” in our minds for a moment? That’s just such a radical image. Anyway from what we can tell, Post-Organic is going to keep those lofty comparisons coming, and we can’t wait till the whole thing is out on October 30th. Until then, we’ll keep our ears and eyes out for any more info we can find.
