Lugubrious Junior

EXCLUSIVE // CLUTCH YOUR CHEST TO LUGUBRIOUS JUNIOR’S “COFFEE, STIMULANTS, AND OTHER HEART ATTACK TRIGGERS” FEATURING FAREZ SIDDIQUI

Frankly, when we first saw the title of Lugubrious Junior‘s new single in our emails, we felt personally attacked. It’s a relatively known fact that writers, if not creatives in general, have a complex, borderline mythological relationship with coffee… and yes, other stimulants and heart attack triggers. But literally, right now we’re on cup #2, and we’re already thinking about another pot.

That being said we, we try to own it. We have a problem. But today’s not about us- LJ’s formula for stacked math rock has been all but proven at this point with the singles so far, and we’re happy to report the new single is no different.

The Tallahassee project initially teased us with something instrumental, but follow up “Ricotta and Whatnot” took a swing at swan-flavored post-hardcore with highly melodic vocals upfront, and now “Coffee, Stimulants…” takes things even further.

Kurt Stevenson’s vocals once again add a lot of tonal depth to the picture, perfectly bridging the melodic ideas established up to this point in LJ with his own style and delivery. The song also lets Farez Siddiqui go ape on the guitar solo for the track during the heavy moments, and those chugs go by quick, but actually they might be Junior’s most progressive pop-outs yet with those thump-y, Animals as Leaders meets Dance Gavin Dance leads. And it probably doesn’t need much mention, but of course we will – Kris Crummett, Corey Bautista, and Brody Taylor knock it out of the park with the overall mix.

There’s so much to the general Lugubrious Junior sound that every song feels like a preview of something larger, and of course until we get something like a full LP, that’s kind of what they are. But they’re so fascinating we’re really glad they get the light of day, and we’re stoked to keep putting it in front of you till said LP arrives, which we have word that it just might be before the end of the year. We’ll keep you posted.
